A live action remake of Akira has been something Hollywood has been chasing since pretty much day one of this site. It’s certainly got close a few times, with perhaps Jaume Collet-Serra coming the nearest to getting the project moving, before he departed last year.
Now, though, there may be fresh life for the project, with the news that Thor: Ragnarok and Hunt For The Wilderpeople director Taika Waititi is reportedly in talks to direct.
Warner Bros has targeted Waititi to take the project on, although it won’t be his next film if he says yes. He’s already committed to filming Jojo Rabbit next spring for Fox Searchlight.
Whether the project needs a new screenplay from scratch, too, of it there’s a previous draft that works, is unclear. More as we hear it, though…
