Is The World Ready For An All New Take On’Aliens’? Neil Blomkamp Thinks So….
By Sarah Jayne Alexander
ALIENS is by all accounts one of the biggest and most successful global franchises of all time having reached rarely matched cult status from its first release way back in 1979 when director Ridley Scott brought the sci-fi heroine known as Lieutenant Ellen Ripley and her team to the big screen. Originally created by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett, Aliens follows the story of a crew based on board the starship Nostromo which has completed its mission and is on the return journey back to Earth. The ship is diverted to a desolate planet after receiving a cryptic signal from a seemingly derelict alien spacecraft but whilst the team are exploring the alien ship they discover a large chamber that contains thousands of strange looking eggs. After a fatal encounter with one of the eggs’ contents, the team breaks protocol and set about bringing the injured crewman back aboard the ship which as you can imagine, turns out to be no tea party spelling the end for the ship and her doomed crew. All but one.
There are currently four films currently in the series, each directed by a different director including: Ridley Scott (1)
James Cameron (2) David Fincher (3) and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (4) and a screenwriting team which includes James Cameron (Titanic/Avatar) , The Avengers writer/director Joss Whedon and original character creator Dan O’Bannon. There have been other spin offs since 1997 of course including the equally successful Alien vs Predator films in 2004 and 2007 and most recently ‘Prometheus’ which saw Ridley Scott returning to produce/direct the aliens prequel in 2012 starring Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace with the sequel ‘Prometheus 2’scheduled for release in 2016.
In early January 2015, District 9 director Neill Blomkamp innocently posted some (he apparently has tons more that is yet to be unveiled) of his Alien concept art on Instagram which he had been working on during post production of his next film ‘Chappie’ (which stars Sigourney Weaver) showcasing what he would like to see if a new take on the space bound sci-fi horror franchise was to ever come about. The incredible drawings (which you can see further down) sent the internet into a crazed frenzy in the hope they would be followed by a studio announcement of an Aliens 5 That never happened….well….until now….
The South African Director has reportedly said that Fox are VERY interested in his version on the series and the decision is up to him not them. He added “I’m the problem. Fox would make it. Like, tomorrow. They would make it….but if it’s going to happen, it has to be on my terms. There is a high possibility that the Alien movie could happen”
Sitting down with Uproxx to talk about his latest film, sci-fi action comedy drama Chappie, he explained why he began sketching out alien concept art. “What happened was, when Chappie got heavily into post-production, I could take my foot off the gas a bit. I was thinking about what I wanted to do next and I’ve been wanting to make an Alien film for years and years.” And we want you to make it!
The concept art-which had had never been seen by the public before shows Sigourney Weaver returning as Ripley and a new take on the original Alien concept art which was created by the late H.R. Giger with what looks like teeth on its back.
