Actor Ansel Elgort never tries to boost his Hollywood profile because he hates the “fake” showbiz world.
The actor is garnering more and more attention thanks to films like The Fault in Our Stars and the Divergent franchise.
He’s also a keen DJ, but with both his music and film work, Ansel shuns taking the easy road to make money.
“I just do what I like to do. It’s not about being strategic – I could live in LA, DJ Top 40 hits for tons of cash in bottle service clubs. I could take every YA [Young Adult] franchise film I ever got offered. But I don’t think about what’s right for me, image-wise. I don’t care about that s**t. The whole Hollywood world – the world that the media sells you – is fake, it’s not real,” Ansel expressed to Britain’s GQ magazine.
Young Adult novels like Divergent and The Hunger Games series have become cinema gold, helping to launch the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Shailene Woodley to superstardom.
Ansel enjoys his time on set, filming fast-paced sequences but has bigger career plans.
“The process of filming an action movie isn’t about the process, it’s about the result. When filming action movies everyone is working towards getting the perfect shots, hit your mark, lines down, emotion more or less at the right place. It is fun but it isn’t the most artistically fulfilling experience,” he confessed.
With Ansel’s flourishing DJ career, as Ansolo, the 21-year-old joins an ever-growing crop of artistic film stars who prove there’s more to them than just making movies. He welcomes comparisons to James Franco and Shia LaBeouf.
“I view them as very genuine. They are both f**king great actors. They’re great artists in general. If you are an artist you just feel the need to express yourself in a lot of different ways. I think that as an actor, you can actually begin to get away with being yourself,” he said.
