Oscar winner Brie Larson shudders at the thought of past auditions, where she was asked to look more sexy.
The 26-year-old picked up the Best Actress Academy Award for her role in Room on Sunday night (28Feb16) and all the memories of past failures came flooding back amid the emotion of the big night.
After her win in Hollywood, Larson was asked if there was a pivotal moment in her career she could recall and took reporters back to a time when casting directors feared she wasn’t sexy enough.
“I would go into auditions and casting (people would say), ‘We really love what you’re doing, but we’d love for you to come back in a jean mini skirt and heels…
“For me, I personally always rejected that moment. I tried maybe once and it always made me feel terrible. A jean mini skirt does not make me feel sexy, it makes me feel uncomfortable.”
Thanks to Room, Larson now hopes she’ll be offered more substantial roles of “women that I know… complicated women”.
Prior to the Oscars she told the Los Angeles Times even as a child star she had awful audition experiences, because she wanted to be taken seriously.
Going up for TV ads for Barbie dolls, Brie recalls, “What they’re looking for is an effervescent kid who has a cute voice and can do a song and dance, but I wanted to do monologues.
“They would ask my name and what my hobbies were and I’d say, ‘I like to act…’ They’re like, ‘Ah, yeah, OK, let’s move on to the next kid’.”
“The funny part is, now I don’t really want to be taken seriously,” she adds. “Now I find seriousness to be rather ridiculous.”
