As he embarks on the promotional tour for his eagerly-awaited new directorial venture, Live By Night, Ben Affleck is inevitably fielding quite a few questions about his proposed standalone Batman film.
In conversation with the New York Times, the question of the new movie came up, and Affleck noted that “we still have to get a screenplay and get it together”. When pressed to confirm that he was writing the movie, Affleck added, with a chuckle, that “I am. that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s going to be good”.
“I’m a real believer in not doing, not reverse engineering projects to meet a window or a date, but rather like when you get the right story or you get the right idea or you get the right thing, then you make the movie”, he added. “And so that’s what we’re doing, and I’m hoping to get that done and spending a lot of time on that, but I’m also working on other stuff. And if I could, if I can find it right then there’s nothing I’d love more than to direct a standalone, you know, iconic great Batman movie”.
Which does appear to be the plan. No formal release date has been announced for the project, though Warner Bros has available dates in the summers of 2018 and 2019. We wait and see just when Affleck can have The Batman ready for.
Live By Night, meanwhile, arrives in UK cinemas on January 13th 2017.
