The result was ‘All American High’, an unusually honest and humorous look at 80’s teen life. Told through the eyes of a visiting exchange student, the film presents an uncensored view of senior year in the era of big hair, punks, and parachute pants. Thirty years after they lived it, the film’s original subjects return in ‘All American High Revisited’ to look back at one of the most memorable chapters of their lives.

Amy (15)

Documentary | Biography | Music

Dir. Asif Kapadia, UK, 2014, 127 mins

Cast (as herself): Amy Winehouse

From BAFTA award-winning director Asif Kapadia (Senna), AMY tells the incredible story of six-time Grammy-winner Amy Winehouse – in her own words.

Featuring extensive unseen archive footage and previously unheard tracks, this strikingly modern, moving and vital film shines a light on the world we live in, in a way that very few can.

A once-in-a-generation talent and a pure jazz artist in the most authentic sense, Amy wrote and sung from the heart using her musical gifts to analyse her own problems. The combination of her raw honesty and supreme talent resulted in some of the most original and adored songs of the modern era.

Her huge success, however, resulted in relentless and invasive media attention which coupled with Amy’s troubled relationships and precarious lifestyle saw her life tragically begin to unravel.

Amy Winehouse died from alcohol poisoning in July 2011 at the age of 27.

First Film, The (PG)

Documentary | Biography | History

Dir. David Wilkinson, UK/France/US, 2015, 110 mins

Cast (as themselves): David Wilkinson, Sarah Lancashire, Tom Courtenay, Joe Eszterhas

Leeds born filmmaker David Nicholas Wilkinson’s thirty three year quest to prove that the worlds film industry started in Leeds, Yorkshire, England in 1888.

In October 1888 Louis Le Prince produced the world’s first films in Leeds, England. These were shot on cameras patented in both America and the UK. Once he had perfected his projection machine Le Prince arranged to demonstrate his discovery to the American public and thus the world.

On 16th September 1890, just weeks before he was due to sail to New York Louis Aime Augustine Le Prince stepped onto the Dijon to Paris train and was never seen again.  No body was ever found so legally no one could fight the Le Prince claim that he invented a camera that recorded the very first moving image.

As a result, several years later, Thomas Edison and the Lumiere Brothers were to claim the glory and the prize of being acknowledged as the first people to pioneer film. Louis Le Prince was never added to history books. But for one lone voice, who worked with him, Le Prince’s name and his pioneering work was forgotten.

Magician: The Astonishing Life & Work of Orson Welles

Documentary

Dir. Chuck Workman, US, 2014, 91 min

Cast: Peter Bogdanovich, Orson Welles

A wonderfully entertaining, illuminating and finally very touching portrait of Orson Welles. A child prodigy who went on to make extraordinary, often game-changing contributions to whatever medium he chose to be involved in – radio, theatre, film and television – Welles quickly came to be regarded as a ‘genius’: a double-edged acclamation, with its hints of profligacy and arrogance. The truth was more complex, as shown by Workman’s use of clips from works both familiar and unreleased; testimonies from family, friends and fans, collaborators and critics (from Simon Callow to Steven Spielberg, Charlton Heston to Jonathan Rosenbaum); and, best of all, anecdotes, admissions and insights galore from the great man himself. As Peter Brook says, we shall never see his like again.

Dear White People

Comedy | Drama

Dirs. Justin Simien, Adriana Serrano, US, 2014, 108 min

Cast: Tyler James Williams, Tessa Thompson, Kyle Gallner

Dear White People is a sly, provocative satire of race relations in the age of Obama. Writer/director Justin Simien follows a group of African American students as they navigate campus life and racial politics at a predominantly white college in a sharp and funny feature film debut.

The unexpected election of activist Samantha White (Tessa Thompson) as head of a traditionally black residence hall sets up a college campus culture war that challenges conventional notions of what it means to be black. While Sam leverages her notoriety as host of the provocative and polarizing radio show “Dear White People” to try to prevent the college from diversifying Armstrong Parker House, outgoing head-of-house Troy Fairbanks (Brandon P. Bell), son of the university’s dean (Dennis Haysbert), defies his father’s lofty expectations by applying to join the staff of Pastiche, the college’s influential humor magazine. Lionel Higgins (Tyler James Williams), an Afro-sporting sci-fi geek, is recruited by the otherwise all-white student newspaper to go undercover and write about black culture—a subject he knows little about—while the aggressively assimilated Coco Conners (Teyonah Parris) tries to use the controversy on campus to carve out a career in reality TV.

But no one at Winchester University is prepared for Pastiche’s outrageous, ill-conceived annual Halloween party, with its “unleash your inner Negro” theme throwing oil on an already smoldering fire of resentment and misunderstanding. When the party descends into riotous mayhem, everyone must choose a side.

Reunion, The

Drama

Dir. Anna Odell, Sweden, 2013, 88 min, Subtitles

Cast: Sandra Andreis, Kamila Benhamza, Anders Berg

In the autumn of 2010, all the students from class 9c in Enskede in Stockholm meet for a 20-year reunion party. Everyone but Anna Odell. She was not invited. Anna was bullied throughout the first nine years of her school education. Why was she the only one excluded from the reunion? What did her former classmates want to avoid? Hierarchies and power structures within groups are the focus of THE REUNION, directed by artist Anna Odell. Moving the past into the present, THE REUNION raises questions about harassment, fear, courage, identity and belonging.

The film opens with a class reunion where Odell investigates what might have happened if she were to have been invited. Anna Odell plays herself and actors play the roles of her former classmates. The dinner party ends in chaos and Odell is eventually evicted by force by her classmates. The film’s second part begins, and we learn that what we just saw was a staging, a “mise en scène”, by Odell, who then makes calls to her real class mates inviting them to watch the “mise en scène” with her, and asking for an open discussion about their common past.

Once they enter the woods, Sam quickly feels something is not quite right. He soon stumbles upon a mysterious tree house and meets a shifty, masked feral-looking child. When Sam tries to warn his leaders, they ignore him: the boy often tells tall tales and Sam’s mysterious past which he refuses to talk about makes his leader Peter mistrust him. As Sam gets more and more isolated from the other scouts, he becomes convinced a terrible fate awaits them: the Feral Child, it turns out, is the helper of the Poacher, an evil psychopath, who has riddled the forest with ingenious traps and is intent on slaughtering the scouts… one by one…

Iris (12)

Documentary | Biography | History

Dir. Albert Maysles, US, 2015, 131 mins

Cast: Carl Apfel, Iris Apfel

The latest film from legendary documentarian Albert Maysles (GREY GARDENS, GIMME SHELTER), IRIS pairs the late 88-year-old filmmaker (who passed away on March 5) with Iris Apfel, the quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed 93-year-old style maven who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades. More than a fashion film, the documentary is a story about creativity and how a soaring free spirit continues to inspire. IRIS portrays a singular woman whose enthusiasm for fashion, art and people are life’s sustenance and reminds us that dressing, and indeed life, is nothing but an experiment. Despite the abundance of glamour in her current life, she continues to embrace the values and work ethic established during a middle-class Queens upbringing during the Great Depression. “I feel lucky to be working. If you’re lucky enough to do something you love, everything else follows.”
