Daredevil showrunner will pen new Akira script

Warner Bros. hasn’t given up on a live-action version of Akira after all! While the project had seemed dead and buried after years of delays and false starts, THR is now reporting that Marco J. Ramirez has been tapped by the studio to write a new script.

Ramirez recently worked as a writer on the Daredevil TV show, impressing so much that he has since been promoted to showrunner for the forthcoming second series. He’ll be charged with adapting the original manga comic, which is set in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo and follows a young man with burgeoning telekinetic powers.

The last time Akira was a going concern at Warner, Jaume Coillet-Serra was in place to direct, with Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart and Gary Oldman poised to star before budget and script issues led the studio to pull the plug. Whether any of those components will return this time around remains to be seen, but Warner clearly hasn’t given up the ghost on this most long-gestating of projects…
