It’s not the biggest surprise, perhaps, but it is now official. Disney has confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange will be back on the big screen this year, as part of the ensemble for Thor: Ragnarok.
The Thor sequel, which lands in the UK in October, will now feature Doctor Strange alongside Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk. It’s unclear just how sizeable Cumberbatch’s role in the movie will be at this stage, and whether we’re looking at a cameo, or something more substantive. We will, of course, keep you posted as we find out more.
Elsewhere in Thor: Ragnarok news, if you had doubts that the Planet Hulk storyline was going to be woven somewhere into the upcoming Thor: Raganarok – that sees Mark Ruffalo reprising the role of Hulk – then they might just be dissipating. We already know that both Meik and Korg are likely to appear in the movie, both of whom are featured in the Planet Hulk comic book storyline.
In a chat with Total Film, director Taika Waititi has been nattering about where Hulk and Thor will meet up in the new film. And as it turns out, it’s the planet Sakaar. “Sakaar was just an insane, far-off futuristic place which was the biggest shift for the film and these characters.”, Waititi is quoted as saying, confirming the location’s presence in the new movie.
Again, this is a sizeable setting from Planet Hulk, and whilst it’s not being suggested that Thor: Ragnarok will be telling the exact story from the comics, it’s clearly drawing sizeable influences. More as we hear it…
