Driving Miss Daisy: The Play

The much loved play about an elderly matriarch and her chauffeur, followed by a career-spanning live Q&A with star Angela Lansbury.

When septuagenarian southern American widow Daisy Werthan (Angela Lansbury) prangs her brand new car, her son Boolie (Boyd Gaines) insists that she’s no longer capable of driving. Despite the proud matriarch’s protests, he hires a chauffeur: uneducated, 60-year-old African-American Hoke Colburn (James Earl Jones).

From such unpromising beginnings, a decades-long friendship flourishes. Alfred Uhry’s powerful, Pulitzer Prize-winning 1987 play was a huge hit with audiences and subsequently adapted to become an Oscar-winning movie.

David Esbjornson’s acclaimed production stars two of the world’s most lauded living actors: Angela Lansbury and James Earl Jones.

It was recorded at The Comedy Theatre, Melbourne, Australia in 2013.

Broadcast from London’s BFI Southbank, this special event includes a 45-minute live Q&A with Angela Lansbury about her distinguished stage and screen career.
