Actor Dylan O’Brien thought he was too shy to act.
The 24-year-old has worked his way up the Hollywood ladder after winning the part of Thomas in The Maze Runner franchise.
While many young stars are fulfilling lifelong dreams, the American star never thought he’d end up on the big screen.
“It’s crazy! As a kid, I never even thought about acting,” he marvelled to Germany’s Bravo magazine. “I was far too shy and never would have thought I could do it. But by chance, my now manager saw one of my YouTube videos and offered me an opportunity. I was really lucky!”
He’s also landed a lead in Deepwater Horizon, a thriller starring Mark Wahlberg that is out in 2016. Even now he can’t believe he’s gone from a jittery performer to a red-carpet staple.
“I am still shy! I was a quiet child and was always scared of my piano recitals at school. Later on, in high school, I started playing the drums but lost my sticks on stage due to nerves! Total disaster!” he cringed. “I still get nervous. There’s no magic answer, you just have to get through it. Face your fears!”
Dylan has been keeping himself busy recently promoting the latest Maze Runner instalment, The Scorch Trials, with his co-stars Kaya Scodelario and Thomas Brodie-Sangster. While he works hard these days, he didn’t have a clue what to do after school.
“All I could think about was my YouTube videos,” he admitted. “As soon as I finished my homework, I’d start on my videos. I had no idea about my future, no plan. I just couldn’t see that my greatest passion had been right in front of my eyes that whole time…”
Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is out in cinemas across the world now.
