Ellen Page: Homophobia makes me sad

Actress Ellen Page sees homophobia as “unfortunate and ignorant”, so it makes her sad rather than angry.

The 28-year-old actress came out as gay on Valentine’s Day 2014 during a speech at the Time to Thrive conference. Since then she’s fully embraced her sexuality and even stepped out on the red carpet with her girlfriend Samantha Thomas in September (15).

But there have been some pitfalls, such as being targeted by people who disagree with her sexuality.

“I might get some homophobic stuff on my social media,” she told backstage magazine. “Who cares? That goes in one ear and out the other. It makes me more sad, because it’s representative of a really unfortunate, ignorant way of viewing the world that does lead to a lot of pain.”

Ellen’s latest film Freeheld is close to home, as she plays the partner of a police lieutenant, portrayed by Julianne Moore. When Julianne’s character Laurel Hester is diagnosed with terminal cancer, the couple must battle to secure her pension benefits.

“The issue of being in a closeted relationship was, needless to say, something I understand,” Ellen said of her part as Stacie. “I’ve been in closeted relationships, and it’s not as simple as people think. I mean, I’m sure it can be. But if you’re existing in one it’s because one person, or both people, have made a conscious choice to live and exist that way – you understand the complexity of the situation and you’re doing it.”

Ellen has been in front of the camera from a young age, and it was all a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Actor John Dunsworth visited her school when she was 10 and suggested she audition for a part in TV show Trailer Park Boys. She won the role and will always be grateful for how things panned out.

“I do think If I had been sick that day at school, what would have happened?” she mused. “Would I have stumbled upon it? I always loved acting – I made my mom take me to the high school plays – so there was that innate desire.”
