Producer Simon Kinberg has been discussing the state of Fox’s Fantastic Fourfranchise, a property the studio rebooted this summer with less-than-impressive results. Aside from the universal critical mauling the film received, it suffered from a poor box office haul that threw some doubt onto whether we’d ever get a sequel.
“I was obviously disappointed,” Kinberg told MTV News. “I was most disappointed that fans didn’t like it. I care more about them than I do anyone else. But I haven’t done a full deep dive on it. Do I think it was unfairly treated? I don’t know.”
Fair or not, he goes on to confirm that Fantastic Four 2 is still in development. “I’m really focused on the next one… I do believe there is a great Fantastic Four movie that we’ve made with that cast. So I’m gonna figure out what that is.” As for whether or not the leading quartet would be back? “We’re figuring out what that movie would be. I’d like that to happen.”
One of the titular foursome threw in their two cents on the matter, with Kate Mara adding she thinks it’s “unlikely that [a sequel] will happen, but I would love to [do one]. I would love to play Sue Storm in a movie that everybody loves. That would be great.”
Currently Fox is still 100% committed to making that movie with Fantastic Four 2 scheduled to open on June 9, 2017.
