If you had any doubt that there will be a ninth installment in the Fast & Furious franchise – even appreciating that Fast & Furious 9 and Fast & Furious 10 have long been announced – then this should wipe that away once and for all.
The eighth movie in the series just opened to the kind of spectacular numbers that should keep this thing going for another decade or so.
Fast & Furious 8 opened with just over $100 million at the US box office over the Easter weekend, which is impressive enough. But it’s the global opening that really delivered. Opening in over 60 countries, Fast & Furious 8 took in an additional $432 million overseas, for a whopping $532.5 million opening weekend.
For comparison, Star Wars: The Force Awakens previously had the biggest opening weekend with a combined $529 million. Did you ever think you’d see the day when this franchise would be able to claim it’s bigger than Star Wars? Box Office Mojo has a nice breakdown of the massive opening weekend if you’d like more details.
Production on Fast & Furious 9 is expected to begin next year…
