The prospect of a sequel to Sony’s English-language version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo appears to be dead in the water, with Rooney Mara confirming that a second film looks unlikely.
Despite largely positive reviews, David Fincher’s first film performed below expectations at the box office, causing the studio to insist upon a reduced budget for any potential sequel.
Fincher eventually walked away from the project, while original star Daniel Craig’s hefty salary meant he too was unlikely to return. Now, judging by Mara’s comments, the whole thing looks to be off.
I don’t think it’s going to happen,” Mara told E! Online. “I’m sad never to do it again, but it just doesn’t seem like it’s in the cards.”
Sony has yet to come out with an official statement, but for now it seems as though fans of Scandi-inspired noir will have to find their fix elsewhere…
