Guillermo del Toro thinks Pacific Rim 2 would be “quite the playground” to work on, so he hopes it gets made.
The Mexican director helmed the 2013 sci-fi flick about a battle between humankind and sea creatures, starring the likes of Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba and Ron Perlman. Earlier this month he sent movie buffs into a frenzy by revealing he had lunch with Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams, adding in the tweet that if a sequel to Pacific Rim gets made she’d be offered a role. Guillermo remains optimistic that the flick will happen.
“Me too, but it’s above my pay grade at this point,” he told Den of Geek when the interviewer said he wanted to know when the project was happening, not if it is. “I turned the screenplay, I turned the budget, and now it’s their decision to make it. I hope we do. I think the screenplay is more interesting for me than even the first. It has a lot of strange complexities and now that we know the characters I can enjoy myself with Newt and Gottlieb and Herc and Raleigh. It would be quite the playground.”
He added that the meeting with Maisie was specifically to discuss featuring in the follow up. The filmmaker sees her as a strong performer with great power and is desperate to add her to the cast. Guillermo is such a fan that he wouldn’t want Maisie to alter herself for the film.
“I would like to preserve her exactly the way she is, if she likes the part and everything goes well,” he smiled. “The same way that I worked with Idris Elba on the first one and he said, ‘Which accent should I do?’ and I said, ‘North London is fine.’ I like it. I like a North London accent on the leader of the free world.”
