Using his verified twitter account, Sir Ian McKellen, best known for his portrayal of characters including (but not exhaustive) X-Men’s Magneto, Gandalf The Grey in both Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies and Shakespeare’s King Lear, took to his keyboard to share a first look 2 minute long clip for Miramax’s 2015 release Mr Holmes directed by Golden Globe winner Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters/The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 & 2) and is reportedly based on the 2005 Mitch Cullin novel ‘A Slight Trick of the Mind’
The 75 year old British acting legend stars as a retired 93 year old version of the infamous deducing genius now found retreating in a seaside farmhouse with his housekeeper Mrs. Munroe (Laura Linney) and her young son Roger (Milo Parker) for company. The storyline, set in 1947, focuses on the world famous detectives last years rather than his usual younger/active years, and the hard task of coming to terms with his diminishing mental abilities whilst wishing to solve one last case.
Obviously, at 93 years of age Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic case solving detective can’t do this alone and with Watson long gone, Holmes comes to rely on the Roger as he revisits the 50 year old case that made him give up his detective work and confront his ever declining health. Bill Condon says about his latest offering: “Mr. Holmes reflects upon the interplay between truth and legend, age and memory, unresolved guilt and the chance to finally make peace with oneself.” You can see the first clip for Mr Holmes here:
Mr Holmes is in cinemas Summer 2015.
