The horror that burns calories…

As Above, So Below

A recent study of film viewers undertaken by Brunel University London, one of the UK’s leading research universities, has found that a single viewing of new horror As Above, So Below can burn over 150 calories.

It was found that, on average, viewers burnt 154 calories during the film’s play (40 more than an average* 20 year-old male’s estimated resting daily energy expenditure for 90 minutes, and more than 60 for a female of the same age**). The figure is above average for horror films, which was found to be nearer 133 according to a previous study***.

Christopher Stock from the Centre for Sports Medicine and Human Performance at Brunel University London, who undertook the study said:

“The findings show that viewers of the film used more calories than the previously reported average for horror films and is a little more than you’d find in a small smoothie.”

The study also found that 79% of participants demonstrated increased anxiety following the screening of the film, regardless of whether the individual was a fan of the horror genre or not. Stock said:

“We might have expected for those participants who claimed to have enjoyed horror (over 50% of those in the screening) to have been prepared for what they saw on screen, but a large majority were still anxious at the film’s close.

“It’s clear the film’s narrative pulls on a range of emotional factors for viewers, as different moments in the film had different effects on those in the screening room throughout.”

In the study screening of As Above, So Below, participants were monitored to note a range of physiological and psychology reactions to what they saw on screen.
