Mad Max: Fury Road lands top prize

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD landed another big film win on Friday (29Jan16) at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts’ (AACTA) International Awards.

Filmmaker George Miller’s post-apocalyptic action movie picked up the Best Film honour, while the man behind the blockbuster took home a Best Direction trophy.

Leonardo DiCaprio, who was to win a Screen Actors Guild Outstanding Actor award the following night (30Jan16), was named Best Lead Actor for The Revenant, while Aussie Cate Blanchett was feted with the Best Lead Actress prize for Carol.

Blanchett’s co-star Rooney Mara was also a winner – she scored the Best Supporting Actress prize – and Bridge of Spies’ Mark Rylance picked up the Best Support Actor gong.

Spotlight writers Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer won the Best Screenplay accolade.

The winners of the fifth edition of the AACTA’s International Awards were unveiled at a ceremony in Los Angeles almost two months after the Australian version of the Oscars, the AACTAs, took place in Sydney.
