Mamma Mia! 2 news may not seem like a big deal to some, but when you factor in the first film’s $600m worldwide box office and its status as one of Amazon UK’s biggest selling DVDs of all time, it’s likely to be pretty important to fans eager for another slice of the musical romance.
Surprising news came when the one and only Cher revealed that she’s nabbed a part in the sequel over on her Twitter account. The legendary singer hasn’t appeared on screen since 2010’s Burleseque, with Christina Aguilera.
The last pieces of fresh casting news we had for the soon-to-shoot Mamma Mia sequel was when we learned that Amanda Seyfried would be back to play Sophie in the new movie, one new addition, and another returnee.
Christine Baranski is the very welcome returnee, and she’ll be reprising the role of Tanya. Lily James, meanwhile, is set to play a younger version of Meryl Streep’s character from the original film, with part of the new movie using flashbacks.
The other core cast from Mamma Mia! – Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Julie Walters, Dominic Cooper and Stellan Skarsgard – are all expected back.
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again! is going to dig further back into the Abba songbook, and reprise a few songs from the original movie. This time, though, there’s no hit stage musical to base it all on, and thus Ol Parker – who penned The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – was hired to put a new screenplay together. He’ll be directing this one, too.
The plot remains pretty unknown thus far, but as we find things out, we’ll let you know. Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, however, will be lending a significant helping hand with the music and lyrics, and will executive produce the new movie.
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again! is due in cinemas on July 20th 2018.
