After Guy Ritchie’s movie of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. spluttered a little at the box office, it was pretty much assumed that was that. That plans for a franchise had petered out after just one outing.
The film starred Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer, and Hammer is currently doing US press for Ben Wheatley’s latest movie, Free Fire (and a very fine movie it is too). Chatting to Slashfilm, Hammer has revealed that The Man From U.N.C.L.E. 2 may yet actually be a thing.
“I called Lionel Wigram, the producer of the movie, and he and Guy produced it and wrote it all together. I was like, ‘dude, what’s the deal? I get asked about this shit all the time. Can you just write a sequel?’ He was like ‘you know what? Yeah … I’ll do it. Sure, I’ll write a sequel”.
And there’s more.
“I was like ‘if you write one, I’m sure we can get one made,’ so who knows? Today is the first day I’ve actually told anyone that story. I only told one other person who asked. Apparently, the sequel is being written right now. No pressure, Lionel!”.
Well, some pressure Lionel. Of course, just because a script is being written, that doesn’t mean that Warner Bros will stump up for another film, nor that Guy Ritchie – shortly to start filming Aladdin for Disney (after completing the press tour for his incoming King Arthur movie) – will want to make it.
We’ll keep you posted as we hear more about this one. A long shot, we’d call it. But this time last week, it seemed a non-existent shot…
