Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie is to take the lead role in Bad Monkeys, a sci-fi thriller novel adaptation from writer Matt Ruff…
Despite already providing excellent performances in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf Of Wall Street and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, it’s all-but certain that it’ll be Suicide Squad that brings Margot Robbie’s talents to a wider audience. If the trailers are anything to go by, her take on the unhinged Harley Quinn is likely to steal the entire movie.
Looking further ahead, Robbie’s lined up for a starring role in Bad Monkeys, an adaptation of a novel by Matt Ruff. A thriller with sci-fi undertones, it’s one of those stories where we don’t necessarily know whether the central character’s telling the truth or not; if all goes to plan, Robbie will play Jane Charlotte, a woman thrown into a detention centre for murder. Janes tells a psychiatrist, Dr Vale, that she’s a member of an underground organisation – the Bad Monkeys of the title – which specialises in ridding the world of undesirable people.
Much of the novel involves Jane telling Dr Vale a procession of increasingly wild stories, which should make for some terrific action sequences if realised successfully by whoever takes on the role of director. It’s still early days for Bad Monkeys right now, but it’s clearly being developed as a star vehicle for Robbie, since she’s being given a producer credit as well as the lead role.
If Suicide Squad‘s a major hit – and early reports suggest it will be – Warner will inevitably want sequels and spin-offs (there are even rumblings that Robbie might get her own Harley Quinn movie, though that probably won’t be announced until the numbers are in for Suicide Squad). Bad Monkeys could be a project Robbie can fit in between those.
