Michael Fassbender’s fishy festivities

Michael Fassbender’s Cannes dream crumbled when Marion Cotillard told him he stank of fish.

The handsome actor is currently starring opposite the French beauty in the big screen adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

During the film’s premiere at Cannes Film Festival in May (15) Michael looked dapper on the red carpet in a black tuxedo, white shirt and bowtie. But the moment was ruined by a comment made by his pretty female counterpart.

“I was surprisingly relaxed (at Cannes),” Michael told Britain’s Stylist magazine. “Other than Marion telling me that I smelt of fish. I was sitting next to her, and she was like, ‘Did you have fish for dinner?’ I said, yes and she was like, ‘I just want to tell you because I’m your friend that maybe you should have some chewing gum.’

“And I was like, ‘I’m eating chewing gum!’ So then I had to (mimes breathing into hands) to see if I stank of fish! This was not how I imagined that moment to be.”

It isn’t just Macbeth which the German-Irish thespian is currently promoting. He stars in biopic Steve Jobs as the titular Apple co-founder, with Kate Winslet taking on the role of Joanna Hoffman from the original Mac team.

Michael has nothing but respect for his female co-stars and is shocked by the lack of equality in Hollywood when it comes to pay.

“I think it’s wrong. Absolutely wrong,” he sighed, with the interviewer pointing out it would have been awful if he said it was fine. “Yeah, I think it’s pretty great! (laughs) Put more money in my pocket! Pay women less, pay me more! It’s ridiculous, isn’t it?

“Some of the most exciting actors out there at the moment are female. Jennifer Lawrence, Mia Wasikowska, Alicia Vikander, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet… It needs to happen, and it needs to happen faster.”
