Sandra Bullock has transformed from “America’s sweetheart” to Scarlet Overkill, a world-class female supervillain in the forthcoming Minions.
Yellow, pill-shaped Minions seek to serve the baddest of bad, and in the groovy, late-1960s setting of Minions (out July 10), Scarlet checks all the right boxes.
“Scarlet Overkill has fantastic hair, wears great clothes and has a lethal uppercut,” says producer Chris Meledandri, head of the animation studio Illumination Entertainment. “When we turn her loose on the world, she is going to come out standing on top.”
The real question is how long Overkill, who will be formally unveiled in the Minionstrailer released Tuesday, can stay on top with Minion henchmen. The creatures showed a knack for bringing accidental havoc to their master Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) in 2010’s Despicable Me and 2013’s Despicable Me 2.
The spinoff prequel Minions is an origins story that shows the creatures have historically hurt their beloved evil masters throughout history — unintentionally killing baddies from Tyrannosaurus rex to Genghis Khan.
