The Lobster star Olivia Colman will sit on the 2015 EE Rising Star BAFTA Award jury.
The announcement was made on Wednesday (04Nov15), with British TV host Jonathan Ross also joining the line-up. It’s up to the two of them and industry experts to compile a shortlist for the 2016 awards and the public will vote to decide a winner.
Olivia believes it’s vital to acknowledge up-and-coming stars at this point in their careers.
“I think it’s important to support people who are coming into it,” she explained in a statement according to the BBC.
“I would have liked someone to go: ‘Well done, you’re at the very beginning’… It’s nice to be able to do that for each other.”
She added that any hopefuls who’d like to be in with a chance of selection need to put on a performance “you couldn’t ignore”.
Also sitting on the panel are experts including producer and jury chair Marc Samuelson, film critic James King, Harry Potter director Mike Newell and Nina Gold, casting director for The King’s Speech and The Imitation Game.
The five selected nominees will be announced on 6 January 2016 and the public will then make the final decision, with the winner crowned at the BAFTA ceremony in February (16).
Earlier this year (15) Jack O’Connell, who has appeared in Skins, Starred Up and 300: Rise of an Empire, won the EE Rising Star prize. But the modest star doesn’t claim to have done it all by himself.
“There is a congregation of us, we kind of gravitate towards each other – Benedict (Cumberbatch) and David Oyelowo and Eddie (Redmayne),” he told British newspaper Metro. “I felt very supported by them.”
