Oscars 2016: Complete List of Nominees

EDDIE REDMAYNE will have to compete against actors including LEONARDO DiCAPRIO and MATT DAMON to win his second consecutive Academy Award in February (16).

The British actor, who won in 2015 for The Theory of Everything, was nominated for Best Actor for the second year running as the 2016 awards shortlist was announced on Thursday (14Jan16).

He will have to compete against Leonardo DiCaprio, who won the Best Actor Golden Globe on Sunday (10Jan16) for The Revenant, Matt Damon for The Martian, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs, and Bryan Cranston for Trumbo.

The Best Actress contenders include Cate Blanchett (Carol), Brie Larson (Room), Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn), Jennifer Lawrence (Joy), and Charlotte Rampling (45 Years).

The Best Picture award will be a race between The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, Room, and Spotlight.

Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu looks set for a second consecutive win following his Best Director prize for Birdman in 2015. He is nominated for The Revenant and will compete against Tom McCarthy (Spotlight), George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road), Adam McKay (The Big Short), and Lenny Abrahamson (Room).

The nominations were announced by directors Guillermo del Toro, Ang Lee, actor John Krasinski, and Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles.

The 88th Academy Awards, hosted by Chris Rock, will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on 28 February
