Love is a many-splendored thing, even if it may be all you have while roaming the ghost of an interstellar spacecraft for the next 90 years. At least that’s the challenging premise of Passengers, a new sci-fi space romance that features two of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt. The script for the film by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) triggered a bidding war in Hollywood and remains one of the most sizzling original concepts currently heating up the 2016 movie calendar.

“For me, it’s a story about what’s important to live a full life,” Tyldum said. “It’s not afraid to entertain, but at the same time, it asks big questions about what does it mean to really feel happy. Every generation has its love story. I feel like this is it. I had to do it.”

To add a little more detail, Passengers reflects on a luxury space-liner that is 30 years into its 120-year journey toward the Homestead II colony. Pratt and Lawrence are two of the 5,000 passengers aboard frozen in suspended animation. However, once both are awakened under unfortunate circumstances, they learn that in addition to a robot played by Michael Sheen, they have the enormous spacecraft to themselves. Eventually, they might fall in love, but the ship almost certainly seems destined to malfunction again, thereby endangering the whole population on the ship.

Passengers opens in December…
