20th Century Fox’s upcoming animated comedy RIO 2 is again going to the birds – the Angry Birds – as the Studio announced today it is continuing and expanding upon its relationship with Rovio’s blockbuster “Angry Birds” brand. The partnership was launched two years ago with the game “Angry Birds Rio,” which became a global sensation and topped the charts in over 115 countries.
Rovio’s “Angry Birds Rio” game features hundreds of levels of quality entertainment and signature fun. Forthcoming updates will include four episodes, each of which is thematically and visually connected to new 20th Century Fox’s RIO 2 animation film adventures of Blu, Jewel and the gang. The episodes will be released as updates in the current “Angry Birds Rio” game. The first RIO 2 film themed game update will take flight on December 18, 2013, with additional frequent new content rolling out in the next 6 months. The film’s worldwide release will be in April 2014.

In the game “Angry Birds Rio,” the original Angry Birds are kidnapped and taken to the magical city of Rio de Janeiro, where they eventually escape their captors and set out to save their friends, Blu and Jewel–two rare macaws who are the two principal characters of the films RIO and RIO 2. “Angry Birds Rio” gameplay pairs the familiar physics-based of the original game with unique twists based on the films.
Additionally, Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products and Rovio Entertainment have again joined forces to offer a robust line of complementary retail products. Launching in January 2014, the global licensing program will span all key categories, with new styles and products launching throughout the year. With much of the “Angry Birds RIO” artwork based on key locations throughout Brazil, the game and products will bring consumers into the RIO world. The partnership will also bring exclusive content to fans of the game.
