Could Ripley Return?

Had Neill Blomkamp been given the green light to make his proposed Alien 5 project, then Sigourney Weaver would have been back in the role of Ellen Ripley, in a movie that picked up after Aliens. Blomkamp’s project would have forked away from Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection.

However, 20th Century Fox has opted to follow Ridley Scott’s line of prequel movies to Alien instead, starting with Prometheus and this year adding Alien: Covenant to the box set.

In spite of disappointing box office for the latest chapter in the story, Scott is still keen to make more Alien prequels. In a new posting from Luis Nostromo, Scott has answered the question as to whether we can expect Ripley in any of them, should they go ahead.

“We’re heading toward the back end of the first Alien so [CG work] may be feasible”, he admitted.

“I don’t think it’ll… but Ripley’s going to be somebody’s daughter. Obviously. We’re coming in from the back end. The time constraints, of what’s the time between this film, where we leave David going off heading for that colony, I think you’re probably two films out from even considering her”, he added.

Unless there’s an about turn in the series’ commercial fortunes though, two more Alien prequels in the current line may be something of a long shot. Alien: Covenant begins its global DVD and Blu-ray roll-out next month, which should throw a sizeable amount of extra change into the pot, though.
