Rooney Mara still interested in Dragon sequel

Rooney Mara is still interested, but it sounds like she’s all but given up hope of a The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo sequel…

After impressing in David Fincher’s The Social Network, Rooney Mara made her big breakthrough as Lisbeth Salander in Fincher’s subsequent English language adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. She snagged an Oscar nomination for the role, and was due to return for the two follow-ups, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest.

Box office can be cruel, though, and the 2011 movie grossed $232m worldwide, off a $90m plus marketing and distribution costs budget. It wasn’t a bad return, but it wasn’t what Sony was hoping for. Thus, the film of The Girl Who Played With Fire stalled, even though a screenplay was said to be in place.

There have been flickers of possibility of the project coming back to life, although more recently Sony was said to be considering a reboot of sorts. As for Rooney Mara, in a new interview she sounds pretty resigned to the project’s future. “I’m still open to it”, she told Screen Daily. “But I’m not holding out hope any more”.

A pity. And with David Fincher not back as well, we suspect it’s fair to conclude that this is one sequel that’s not happening…
