Scalarama

Scalarama

After the success of 2011’s Scala Forever, the season of films celebrating the Scala Cinema and rep cinema in London, last year Cinema Nation followed it with Scala Beyond, which saw over 120 exhibitor partners across the UK take part in the celebration of all forms of rep cinema from film clubs and societies to pop-ups and rep cinemas, and even into schools with the collaboration with FILMCLUB.

This year Cinema Nation is planning the follow-up Scalarama, a national celebration of rep and community cinema across the UK in September. We want to encourage, support, celebrate and champion all types of cinema across the country and make Scalarama a regular and long-running annual film season to help increase the number of rep and community screenings and help new audiences discover a whole history of film and alternative cinemas. If the season can inspire a fraction of the number of people that the original Scala did, then Cinema Nation will have achieved one of its main objectives.

Unfortunately, after getting only a third of the funding it applied for last year, this year Cinema Nation hasn’t received any public money, and as such, in addition to the sponsorship and fundraising activities the organisation is doing, they have launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to help fund the season. So they’d be really grateful if you could take a look at the page and consider supporting the season at any level you can. Every pound will make a real difference to the success of the season and continue to inspire exhibitors and audiences across the country.

Cinema Nation would also be really grateful if you could spread the word to anyone you think could also help with donations / support. They’re really depending on the good will and support of everyone who believes that the rep / community scene in the UK is worth keeping alive and celebrating and hope that you can join in supporting them. Even if you could tweet mentioning @scalarama and the campaign, they’d be really grateful.

There’s lots more detail about the season on the Kickstarter page, and Cinema Nation has also produced a summary breakdown of some of the figures from the past two seasons to give you an idea of the scale and reach – you can view it here (on the Roxy server). So please do have a look at the campaign and pledge whatever you can. With your support Cinema Nation hopes to make Scalarama even bigger and better and continue for years to come.
