Shrek 5 Update

When Universal bought up DreamWorks Animation, one of its priorities was to get the Shrek series back up and running. Since Shrek Forever After, there’s been talk of a new film, but also the sense the DreamWorks Animation did some damage to its golden goose with a bunch of follow-ups that didn’t do justice to the original.

However, plans for a new Shrek are coming along, and screenwriter Michael McCullers had been hired to pen Shrek 5. In a new interview, he’s revealed, too, that he’s turned in his script.

“I finished that script which I really, really, really love” he told CinemaBlend. “It’s really personal to me. It’s got a pretty big reinvention behind it that I guess I can’t really reveal, but since DreamWorks was sold to Universal in that time for over $3 billion, I imagine they’re particularly interested in it stepping up and actually figuring out the future of the franchise in that way on the corporate level”.

McCullers admitted that “reinvention was sort of called for. There [have] been four movies and a lot of material, so the characters are pretty beloved and they’re great characters, but you also have to think of a pretty new take at that point”.

Whether it’s McCulles’ script that ends up going forward to become the new Shrek movie remains to be seen. But we’d not wager against seeing a new Shrek adventure on the big screen before the decade is out. More news, of course, as we hear it…
