Director Sofia Coppola has brought the traditional Christmas variety show back with the help of Bill Murray.
The Hollywood pair, along with writer Mitch Glazer, are behind A Very Murray Christmas. It’s a nod to festive shows from a bygone era, with Bill at the helm. Special guests on the Netflix one-off include Miley Cyrus, George Clooney and Rashida Jones.
“It was really just for me, Bill and our friend Mitch to get together to do something, with Bill singing for fun,” Sofia told Britain’s Stylist magazine of the idea behind it. “So I asked him to sing at the Café Carlyle, a legendary place for performers. The idea started with that and the tradition of those old Christmas variety shows with Dean Martin and Bing Crosby.
“(Those shows) were big during my childhood. That’s why we ended up in The Carlyle because it’s one of those great, old landmarks.”
Others stars to lend their support are Superbad star Michael Cera, Chris Rock and Amy Poehler. It was a case of the more random the guest list, the better.
“We tried to be like traditional variety shows which were so random,” Sofia explained. “We wanted to have that eclectic feeling and luckily with Bill, people are gung ho. You say ‘Bill Murray’ and people say ‘OK, yes’. He’s a national treasure in America.”
Sofia is part of a Hollywood dynasty, with her father Francis one of the most respected directors working. Christmas is a special time of the year for the 44-year-old, and it’s become even more family orientated since she became a mother for the first time in 2006.
“Now that I have two kids I like decorating and getting the tree, which I never did before,” she smiled.
“I have to say (Bill Murray movie) Scrooged (is my favourite festive film). I love Christmas albums too. I’ve been listening to Vince Guaraldi’s A Charlie Brown Christmas since I was a kid.”
