Sony and Sega are looking to bring Sonic The Hedgehog to the big screen, with the popular videogame character set to become the star of a new family franchise.
Neal H. Moritz is currently working as producer on the animated / live-action hybrid, with the former aspect to be taken care of by Japanese studio Marza Animation.
Sony are hopeful that the character’s wide-ranging appeal will sustain a long-running franchise, with the plan being to release a new movie in the series every single year.
“There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic The Hedgehog, and a built-in international fan base,” says Hannah Minghella, Sony’s Production President.
“Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we’re looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before.”
Marza CEO Masanao Maeda also weighed in, promising, “a fresh take to Sonic, while still capturing everything that the fans love about him.” No release date has been slated for the first film as yet.
