Spider-Man reboot to ditch origin story

The upcoming Spider-Man reboot brings with it many conflicting emotions for webslinger fans. On the one hand, his return is an exciting prospect as it’s the first time Marvel will be directly involved with an onscreen version of the character. On the other hand, it means we might have to relive his origin story for the third time since 2002. Yawn. Thankfully, as promised by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige way back when, it looks as if it won’t be a part of his solo movie.

Speaking at a recent Captain America: Civil War press event, Feige explained how the studio decided not to include his origin in Cap’s third outing or Spidey’s solo movie. “We spend a lot of time as we work on these movies saying ‘Don’t take it for granted that the audience saw the other the other movies or that the audience is as versed in the comic books as we are.’ We take great pains to give you everything you need to know within the context of whatever movie you’re actually watching.”

“However, we did say, if it’s safe to assume anything, it’s safe to assume that everybody knows how Spider-Man became Spider-Man and what that backstory was. We’ve seen it a number of times now, it’s its own well-known mythology. So we said, let’s reveal that there’s been a Spider-Man in the MCU and we meet him, as you see, in [Civil War].”

It’s great news that won’t see another retread into Spidey’s past – in particular, the sight of Peter Parker lamenting over his inability to stop Uncle Ben’s death. But it would’ve been fun to see how Marvel might have approached it. Still, that doesn’t rule out seeing glimpses of what transformed this Spider-Man into the superhero he is today.

“There are events that made Peter who he was,” Feige adds, “and we’ll certainly allude to those events, but we’re much more focused on his future and how he continues to grow and have a steep learning curve after, certainly, the adventure he had in Civil War on how to be his own hero.”

Directed by Jon Watts and starring Tom Holland, Marisa Tomei, and Zendaya, the as-yet untitled Spider-Man reboot arrives in the US July 7, 2017 and the UK on July 28, 2017.
