Michael Keaton accepts the award for Best Male Lead for Birdman at the 2015 Independent Spirit Awards

The 30th Annual Independent Spirit Awards took place in Santa Monica, California last night, 21st February, 2015.  Founded in 1984, the awards are dedicated to independent filmmakers. The big winner of the evening was Birdman, which picked up three awards, including Best Feature and Best Male Lead for Michael Keaton. Richard Linklater was named Best Director for Boyhood, with a Best Supporting Female win for Patricia Arquette. J.K. Simmons was announed as Best Supporting Male, for Whiplash, while Julianne Moore was named Best Actress for Still Alice.

The winners now just have hours to wait to see if they can repeat their successes for  film’s biggest night of the year – the Oscars!
