Disney To Cast Spells With LucasFim’s ‘Strange Magic’.
By Sarah Alexander.
Since taking the reins in 2012, Disney have gone full steam ahead with the LucasFilm Star Wars franchise announcing and starting production on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, to be released in 2015, a spin off film and just last month released a TV series ‘Star Wars Rebels: Spark Of Rebellion ‘ through LucasFilm Animation.
This new surprise announcement however has nothing to do with Star Wars.
Strange Magic is an idea George Lucas had based on the Shakespeare Play ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and can be traced back to as early as 2010 when rumours of a new secret CGI film could be happening and copyrights were filed for the name ‘Primrose’ –a known fairy flower.
The film will centre around a new fantastical realm and feature voice talents from the likes of Alan Cumming (Bog King) Alfred Molina, Evan Rachael Wood (Marianne), Maya Rudolph (Griselda), Kristen Chenoweth, Peter Stormare, Bob Einstein and more yet to be confirmed. The animated fairytale musical will be directed by Gary Rydstrom (Toy Story Toons) and produced by Mark S.Miller with Lucas Executive Producing. The script is a joint effort from David Berenbaum, Irene Mecchi, and Rydstrom.
It is the first release from LucasFilm Animation since Disney took over and will feature a colourful cast of goblins, elves, fairies and other mythical creatures and follow them on their adventure as they battle an evil potion.
Strange Magic is set for release on January 23rd 2015 via Touchstone Pictures.
