Meet DC’s Official ‘Suicide Squad’ as Warner Bros Confirms All Star A-List Cast for 2016 Blockbuster Adaptation.
By Sarah Jayne Alexander.
Following last week’s X-Men: Apocalypse casting speculations, the internet was abuzz with the news Tom Hardy wouldn’t be able to sign on because he was (apparently) already in talks with rivals DC to star in their next big comic book adaptation The Suicide Squad and filming schedules would clash. We can now tell you that not only has Tom Hardy – who played League of Shadows’ masked villain ‘Bane’ in DC’s The Dark Knight Rises signed on the dotted line, but Oscar winner Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) Will Smith, Jai Courtney and British Model turned Actress Cara Delevigne have all signed on too.
The A list names attached to the feature had long been rumoured starting with Margo Robbie (Wolf Of Wall Street) being cast as Harley Quinn followed by Jared Leto as The Joker and just last week, Tom Hardy was attached but in an unspecified role. We now know exactly who he is playing along with the remaining three roles. Here is the official cast to character list:
Jared Leto – The Joker
Will Smith – Deadshot
Tom Hardy – Rick Flag
Margot Robbie – Harley Quinn
Jai Courtney – Boomerang
Cara Delevingne – Enchantress
The Suicide Squad is the name for two fictional organisations within the DC Comics Universe which comprises of a group of incarcerated supervillains who carry out high risk missions on behalf of the US Government in return for commuted sentences. They – apart from being deniable assets – having nothing to lose and as we know from previous comic-to-film adaptations, that can be extremely dangerous for the rest of mankind. They are for all intents and purposes ‘allowed’ to roam around freely without being targeted by their heroic oppositions. The film will focus solely on them and their missions instead of the usual hero vs villain storyline which up to now is completely new and different to anything that has been released before. The squad have already been seen briefly in ‘Arrow’s Season 2 in which another actor (Michael Rowe) plays Floyd Lawton ‘Deadshot’. He will now be seen on screen in the form of Will Smith.
There are however, two huge and crucial roles to fill in the form of Amanda Waller and Lex Luther before production can start. Amanda Waller is the official who oversees the team (played by Cynthia Addai-Robinson in Arrow) and acts in a similar way to Nick Fury. The studio’s shortlist of actresses being eyed for the role includes Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey -rumoured to be the Warner Bros top choice. Lex Luthor – who is Superman’s arch nemesis and is currently being portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg in DC’s long awaited Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice film is reportedly in discussions over whether he will return for the crossover between the films. If not, that part will need to be re-cast but with casting news flowing thick and fast out of SS HQ it will only be a matter of time before we know who has officially filled these two roles.
The Suicide Squad will be directed by David Ayer (Fury) and produced by both Charles Roven and Richard Suckle. Production is set to start shooting next April in Toronto with a release on August 5th 2016.
Until then you can see the cast in their up and coming releases which include:
Tom Hardy will star in The Revenant opposite Leonardo DiCaprio which hits cinemas next Christmas.
Cara Delevigne stars as a mermaid in Pan alongside Hugh Jackman due for release in 2015.
Jai Courtney will appear in the upcoming Terminator Genisys reboot as well as Unbroken and Insurgent.
Margo Robbie and Will Smith both star in the Warner Bros 2015 release Focus.
This is a developing story and as always we will keep you updated as it unfolds.
