Actress Taryn Manning kept her cool while working with Winona Ryder but was secretly “beside herself” with excitement.
The two women star opposite each other in upcoming movie Experimenter, based on studies by famed psychologist Stanley Milgram (Peter Sarsgaard) that looked into human behaviour. Being such a fan of Winona already, Taryn admits she struggled to remain professional when face to face with her co-star.
“I’m not gonna lie: I was like, ‘Oh, my God!'” Taryn laughed to Details magazine. “She is someone I really looked up to in my childhood. Working with her now? I was beside myself. I think I kept my cool, though. She’s lovely. She really is. When we met, she said the kindest things.”
Taryn plays housewife Mrs. Lowe, which is a far cry from previous roles she’s taken on. With her parts in Netflix series Orange Is the New Black and 2002 movie 8 Mile quite similar, she’s aware people may incorrectly view her as “trailer trash”. It’s been a long journey for Taryn to leave that typecast behind.
“After (2005 film) Hustle & Flow, I was in my early twenties, and I must have gotten six offers to play a prostitute,” she recalled. “I was like, ‘My goodness! I already did that. Can these directors not see past that (performance)? Don’t they want to discover another prostitute?’ So I kind of rebelled against anything that was offered to me. Then I was like, ‘Oh, wow. I’m not working.'”
Luckily Taryn’s role as Tiffany ‘Pennsatucky’ Doggett in Orange Is the New Black has won her countless fans around the globe, and three series in, the feisty prisoner has become more likeable. The actress is pleased her alter ego has been given a new lease of life after starting out as somewhat of a villain.
“Last season for me was amazing,” Taryn smiled. “I have enjoyed the arc that I’ve been written. I am so happy that she’s gotten to jump off the page and be three-dimensional.”
