Now that it has a release date set for March 16th, 2018, the Tomb Raider reboot starring Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina) as Lara Croft is ploughing ahead – with new plot details emerging this week. The producer of the reboot, Graham King, has confirmed that director Roar Uthaug (The Wave) and Transformers: The Last Knight writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet will be taking things backwards instead of forwards with this one.
“Well this is kind of what we call a ‘back to the roots story’. This is a young Lara Croft in search to see if her father is dead or alive, so it has a very emotional part to it and I think that’s what Alicia found so interesting about it. I think the storytelling is really good and i think we’ve got the right crew and a great director and I think it’s going to be really fun making a film like this,” King told HeyUGuys.
The first of the Angelina Jolie Tomb Raider films cast her real life father Jon Voight as Lara’s dad, but the relationship between the pair was never fully explored during what amounted to several brief and choppily-edited moments. Since the new film is rumoured to be adopting the darker and more gritty spirit of the 2013 game series reboot, it will be interesting to see how they approach developing those characters moving forward.
